Artist Statement

“For regions do not suddenly end, as far as I know, but gradually merge into one another. And I never noticed anything of the kind, but however far I went, and in no matter what direction, it was always the same sky, always the same earth, precisely, day after day and night after night. On the other hand, if it is true that regions gradually merge into one another, and this remains to be proved, then I may well have left mine many times, thinking I was still within it. But I preferred to abide by my simple feeling and its voice that said, Molloy, your region is vast, you have never left it and you never shall.”-from Samuel Beckett’s, Molloy

This series of photographs was inspired by the main character from Samuel Beckett’s novel, Molloy. Throughout the story Molloy expressed his feelings of how he wanted to be far off in the vista he saw in his mind rather than on the ground where he stood. I photographed grand vistas as well as the ground under my feet to capture my understanding of this universal desire. My vision was to pair my photographs of enlarged details and the grand vistas back to back hanging them throughout the Richmond Art Center Gallery for the exhibition, “Ballybaba.”

This collection reinforced the concepts I was exploring between relationships and perspective. These pieces are one of a kind limited edition C-prints shot in medium and large format, 4×5 camera, of the Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont, California. Each photograph has been hand crafted in the darkroom to express the mood of the concepts being discovered from this body of work.
