Stela Furtado has always been an artist, inheriting skills from her craftsman father while growing up creating in his cabinet shop. This is where her passion for recycling materials was born, making sculptures from scrap materials much like today. Stella is an artist and advocate in the Queer community, using performance and multimedia with sculpture to convey artistic ideas. She has shown her artwork in galleries for 20 years. Stella worked as a teacher at Create In Clay in Berkeley for four years after graduating from California College of Arts in 2009. She has spent the last eight years producing a gender-bending performance troupe called Fella-Fem, as well as producing sculptural work. She is currently working in her studio (STELA ART) in Oakland as well as teaching. Stela shows her work with Pancake n Booze @111 Minna gallery, UpTown Auto, Alchemy SF, popupsters.com, Hammers and Heels, Femina Potens gallery, ASKEW film festival @ Yerba Buena Arts Center SF, Oakland Pride film festival, CCA alumni, and SPECTRUM Queer Media.
