Artist Statement
“These paintings are inspired by nature’s many ironies, as well as fairy tale narratives (developed, over the centuries) to explain the inconsistencies, recurrences, random acts, and basic injustices in the natural world. They are telling of how we see ourselves. Every recycled version of a fable or fairy tale suggests what our society hopes for, critiques past injustice, and makes a pact with the elements of nature itself. I try to exaggerate the comforts and terrors of nature. I’m juxtaposing subjects that are collectively familiar and hint at narrative. The painting is the beginning of the story for the viewer to complete.” -Beth Roberts, 2015
