Several months ago, as the political climate was changing, many of the –isms we have been hurt by in the past were once again thrust into the fore. Yes, racism, sexism, and sectarianism have never gone away. It was the huge step backwards we have taken as a nation on these issues that began the thought process for this show.
For this show, we asked several resident women artists whose work has been shown here to participate. We chose these artists for a commonality in their work – a focus on the human figure. And we chose them because of their diverse backgrounds. We asked them to create artworks with their distinct voices to explore the themes of Race, Religion and Identity in a contemporary context.
We posed the following question to the artists: In these times of turmoil how can we as a society sit back and stay silent? We invited the artists to submit work which casts a light through the shadows of unseen and unacknowledged biases, forcing society to examine treacherous paradigms with fresh eyes.
A group exhibition featuring works by Alyssa Stanghellini, Marnika Shelton, Lettie McGuire, Hellenmae, Olivia Chen, Zoe Boston, Eleanor Schnarr, and Natasha Dikareva.
