Artist Statement

Since 1999 I have been producing photographs of man-altered landscapes, focusing on California’s metropolitan communities. The photographs I make are an inquisitive perspective that explore the relationship between urban topography and nature-based geography.  These photographs have been a way for me to compare the elaborate systems that are found in nature with the complex systems we create within our society to invent structure and control.

My photographic research into what is urban, and what is natural has lead me to consider my relationship to both environments. The tension between culture and nature is a direct result from the dominant impact human contact has had on our surroundings and atmosphere.   Aware of the exaggerated manipulations we as humans place on our environments, I have chosen to print my work using heightened colors.  This extreme use of color is also inspired by the distinctive yet varying amounts of color I find in the scenery and locations where I make these photographs.  The deliberate rendering of a specific vantage point references my interpretation of these concepts and concerns. The placement or juxtaposition of each image is carefully considered in order to stimulate ideals, beliefs, or maybe even memories for the viewer.
