Jandy Pannell is a jeweler who is strongly influenced by the beautiful tropical surrounds of her home in Cairns, and the delicate balance required to maintain it. Pannell’s work utilities environmentally friendly practices focused on recycling and up-cycling discarded items. Through this, she seeks to raise awareness of sustainability and the negative impact plastic consumer packaging has on the environment.
Pannell’s works for Greensmith display creative reuses for found materials, particularly those washed ashore from the Pacific Ocean “trash vortex”, such as plastic bags which she twines into fine bracelets. These bracelets are then packaged in recycled cat food tins in order to show both the waste of consumer packaging and its potential for reuse.
