Pierina Curties
Brisbane based artist Pierina Curties has completed a Masters in Fine Art majoring in sculpture. In her jewelry practice, she re-uses, recycles and re-purposes materials in a conscious effort to reduce some of the massive consumption of precious metals in the commercial jewelry industry. Having grown up in a family where everything was kept because it one day could be useful again, Curties enjoys creating a new life for discarded and donated objects.
Her works are largely made from donated objects and from a love of collecting. For Posy, Curties has taken three donated and collected old rings and reworked and amalgamated them into a new single ring. Ring ring, uses similarly collected rings to construct a chain necklace, with every second link a ring. Through these works, Curties demonstrates not just the environment potential of recycling and reuse, but their ability to preserve and retell personal narratives.
